0.4Ω vs 0.6Ω vs 0.8Ω: Which Coil Should You Use? (2026)

Last updated: 29 October 2026. Guide by Cloud Express, based on the cartridges and coils we stock.

The number with the Ω symbol on a cartridge or coil is its resistance, measured in ohms. It’s one of the biggest factors in how a pod vapes: how much vapour you get, how warm it feels, how tight the draw is and which e-liquid works best. Here’s what the common numbers mean.

The short answer

  • Lower resistance (0.4Ω): more vapour, a warmer and looser draw. Suits direct-to-lung vaping and freebase liquids.
  • Middle (0.6Ω): the flexible option. Works for mouth-to-lung or a restricted direct-to-lung draw, and suits saltnic.
  • Higher resistance (0.8Ω to 1.0Ω): less vapour and a tighter, cigarette-style draw. The usual choice for saltnic.

MTL vs DTL in plain terms

Mouth-to-lung (MTL) is how most people smoke a cigarette: you draw the vapour into your mouth first, then breathe it in. It needs a tight draw and a higher-resistance coil. Direct-to-lung (DTL) means breathing the vapour straight in, like a deep breath. It needs a looser draw, more airflow and a lower-resistance coil. Restricted DTL sits in between.

Why the resistance changes the vape

A lower-resistance coil lets more power through from the battery, so it heats more liquid at once. That means more vapour, a warmer feel and faster liquid use. A higher-resistance coil runs on less power, which gives a cooler, tighter vape that uses less liquid. That’s why high-strength saltnic is paired with higher-resistance coils, and lower-strength freebase with lower-resistance coils. Our saltnic vs freebase vs HTPC guide explains the liquids side.

Use the cartridge made for your device

Pod devices are tuned to their own cartridges, so always pick a cartridge or coil that’s listed for your device. Some devices give you a choice. The ASDF Core takes its 3ml cartridge in 0.4Ω or 0.6Ω, and the Syokbar Target and NexGen Pro share the same 0.8Ω cartridges. All our spare cartridges and coils are in Cartridges & OCC Coils.

When to change your coil or cartridge

  • It tastes burnt even after you refill and let it soak.
  • The flavour has gone flat or muted.
  • The cartridge is cracked or keeps leaking.

When you fit a new coil or cartridge, fill it and wait a few minutes before your first puff so the cotton can soak. Our open pod refill guide covers this step by step.

FAQs

Which ohm is best for 20mg saltnic?

Higher-resistance coils, around 0.6Ω to 1.0Ω, are the usual match for 20mg saltnic. 0.4Ω coils are generally paired with freebase.

Can I use a 0.4Ω cartridge in any pod device?

No. Use cartridges made for your device. If you’re unsure, WhatsApp us at 019-620 6083 with your device name.

Do closed pods have a resistance too?

Yes, but it’s set by the maker and the coil comes built in. You don’t need to choose it: just buy the pods made for your device.
