Refilling an open pod takes about a minute once you know how. Doing it right stops the two most common problems: leaks and burnt-tasting puffs. This guide covers the steps, the mistakes to avoid and notes for the refillable cartridges we sell.
First, check that your pod can be refilled
Only open pods (also called empty or refillable cartridges) can be refilled. Closed pods, such as KOHS / Syokpod, NCIG Pro, BPOD, BOGAPOD and ASDF Quiid pods, come sealed and pre-filled: when they’re empty, you replace them. Not sure which type you have? See open pod vs closed pod.
What you need
- Your open pod cartridge
- An e-liquid that suits your cartridge (see our saltnic vs freebase vs HTPC guide)
- A tissue for any drips
How to refill, step by step
- Take the cartridge out of the device.
- Find the fill port. Most cartridges have a small silicone plug on the side, top or bottom. The Aspire Cloudflask cartridge, for example, fills from the bottom. Open the plug.
- Fill slowly, pointing the bottle nozzle at the inside wall of the tank. Never drip liquid into the centre air tube: that’s the path to your mouth, and it causes spitting and leaks.
- Stop before it’s full. Leave a small air gap at the top, or fill to the max line if your cartridge has one.
- Close the plug firmly and wipe off any liquid on the outside.
- New cartridge or coil? Wait a few minutes so the cotton inside can soak up the liquid. Vaping a dry coil is what causes a burnt taste.
- Put the cartridge back and start with a few gentle puffs.

Mistakes that cause leaks and burnt hits
- Overfilling: the most common cause of leaks. Always leave a little space.
- Liquid in the air tube: causes gurgling and spitting. Tip it out and wipe the mouthpiece.
- Vaping straight after fitting a new cartridge: the cotton is still dry. Wait a few minutes.
- Running it dry: refill before the tank is empty, or the coil can scorch.
- Wrong liquid for the coil: high-strength saltnic in a 0.4Ω coil can feel harsh. See our coil resistance guide.
When to replace the cartridge
If it still tastes burnt after a refill and a few minutes of soaking, or the flavour stays weak, the coil is worn out. Replace the cartridge (or just the coil, if yours takes OCC coils). Replace it straight away if it’s cracked. Spares are in Cartridges & OCC Coils.
FAQs
Can I refill a closed pod?
No. Closed pods are sealed and pre-filled. When one runs out, replace it with a new pod.
Can I change flavours in the same cartridge?
Yes, but the old flavour can linger for a while. For a clean switch, use a separate cartridge for each flavour.
Why is my new cartridge spitting?
Usually some liquid got into the air tube during filling, or the tank is overfilled. Take the cartridge out, tip out any excess and wipe the mouthpiece.
